Ian Coble on SnowChasers

Photographer Ian Coble was featured on Season 2, Episode 3 of SnowChasers. Coble is candid about how he became a professional shooter, his undergraduate work, and his love of skiing. He discusses using strobes in snow, and the gear he carries in waist-deep accumulations far off the trails.

Typically shooting athletes one to two hours away from his home in Seattle, Coble even gives away a few secrets. For instance, he explains the unlikely fact of how parking lots can be utilized during poor-visibility days.

“For my off-camera strobe work, I use the PocketWizard [radio triggers],” says Coble. “I use the Plus III’s for a lot of the work. For a lot of the action stuff that requires HyperSync, I use the FlexTT5’s and the MiniTT1’s. Those just allow me to shoot with a faster shutter speed [to] actually freeze motion, which has been an awesome thing to take advantage of over the last year, or so.”
