pink Plus III at WPPI

It’s the last day of WPPI, and the response to our special, limited edition Plus III in “Tutu Pink” is almost as frenzied as the buzz surrounding our new PlusX.

The pink Plus III was created to support the Carey Foundation, a nonprofit organization devoted to real world support of women fighting breast cancer. Established by Linda and Bob Carey, the organization will also be benefitting from an upcoming gallery show featuring Bob’s Tutu Project images.

On the evening of March 22nd in New York City, details will be announced on how you can bid on one of just 20 signed and numbered PocketWizard Plus III radio triggers in “Tutu Pink.”

Jaleel King Rolls with PocketWizards

strobist - jaleel king

strobist.blogspot.com

Photographer Jaleel King has been using a wheelchair since he was eight years old, but that hasn’t stopped him from pursuing his photography. Over at Strobist, David Hobby reached out to him for some details on his innovative rig.

In short, Jaleel has built a mobile studio setup by bolting an AB800, power pack, and boom right onto his chair. “After a bout with a (not surprisingly) problematic wired-sync setup,” David writes, “he moved to the PocketWizard FlexTT5 platform, with its ability to remotely control power levels on the AB800. That remote control ability has been a lifesaver.”

See images of the rig in action and a video about Jaleel’s journey on Strobist. See Jaleel’s work on his portfolio.

PocketWizard Announces Easy-to-Use PlusX Transceiver!

The following is the official press release of today’s exciting announcement.

PocketWizard® Announces Easy-to-Use Plus®X Transceiver for Wireless Flash and Camera Triggering

Simplest PocketWizard ever is ideal entry into the PocketWizard wireless system of products

PlusXSo. Burlington, VT – March 1, 2013 – LPA Design, manufacturers of PocketWizard Photo Products, the world leader in wireless control of cameras, flash lighting and light meters, today announces the immediate availability of its new PlusX Auto-Sensing Transceiver.

The high-quality PocketWizard PlusX is the perfect entry into the PocketWizard Wireless System with the same range and reliability of its renowned Plus line of radios.  Whether new to off-camera flash or remote camera triggering, or a seasoned professional looking to expand their PocketWizard wireless triggering system, the PlusX is the perfect choice. And as the user’s technical needs grow, the versatile PlusX will continue to work with any other PocketWizard radios that a photographer adds to their gear box.

The ten Channel PlusX uses PocketWizard’s patented “Auto-Sensing Transceiver Technology” which means it will automatically switch between transmit and receive as needed. Users just turn it on, connect it to the flash or camera and set the channel using its simple, rotary-dial.  The PlusX automatically figures out what it needs to do to trigger remote flashes or cameras. Using the same side-profile design of the PocketWizard Plus III radio, the PlusX has an internal antenna to minimize obstruction and increase durability.

“The new PlusX transceiver adds to the legendary Plus reliability that so many photographers have come to trust on all their photographic assignments,” said Dave Schmidt, Vice President of Marketing at LPA Design, the company that manufacturers PocketWizard Photo Products. “Working on a budget should not mean sacrificing performance or reliability.”

The PlusX is compatible with all PocketWizard transmitters and receivers including PocketWizard-enabled photo gear from Profoto, Dynalite, Norman, Photogenic and Sekonic light meters. The PocketWizard Wireless System allows for total flexibility with whatever lights or cameras a photographer may be working with.

Last September we released our short film about photographer Bob Carey and his personal endeavor called “The Tutu Project.” Using PocketWizard technology, Bob employed remote camera triggering to take self-portraits of himself in a pink tutu. With his wife Linda undergoing chemotherapy treatments, she and her fellow patients enjoyed the photos. This led to The Tutu Project and the creation of the Carey Foundation to support women undergoing breast cancer treatment.

The series has proved incredibly popular, with media coverage from CNN, The Today Show, the BBC, and countless other media outlets. Last fall Bob photographed himself and survivors at a series of halftime events at NFL games.

PocketWizard is proud to announce it is cosponsoring an event to celebrate the Tutu Project’s first anniversary. The event will be held at The Lab NYC, 122 West 26th Street, New York City, on Friday, March 22nd and Saturday, March 23rd, 2013.

As theaters eschew film projectors in favor of digital ones, the movie theater projectionist will become a thing of the past. Photographer Joseph O. Holmes has embarked on a project to document this quickly-disappearing profession.

He writes not only is the lighting inside the projection booths dim, but it’s also pretty awful looking. He brings his own light into these spaces in the form of a softbox and Nikon speedlights, and, if his son isn’t available to assist, he holds the softbox himself and triggers his camera remotely using his PocketWizard FlexTT5® and MiniTT1®.

Rangefinder magazine has an article up entitled “Pushing the Limits with Light and Speed,” featuring dance photographer Sarah Silver and Chris Garrison. We’ve posted about Chris’ work with HyperSync® a number of times, but this is the first we’ve heard of Sarah’s unique style.

Sarah uses a slow shutter speed and strobes with a short flash duration, triggered by PocketWizard Plus® III’s, to visually represent the powerful and dramatic movements of her dancer subjects.

Rangefinder writes of her work, “Whether she’s photographing dancers frozen in a firestorm of water or a Muybridge-esque running sequence for Nike, Silver’s lighting, timing and vision are spot-on at capturing exciting images at the peak of the moment.”

It’s always a challenge figuring out what the LPA holiday card is going to be. Every year we come up with all these grand ideas involving everyone in the company, dressed for the holidays, in some crazy location. Then reality hits that we are all very busy, the days are short, and people enjoy wearing Christmas sweaters about as much as they enjoy eating fruit cake. We had to come up with Plan B.

Donald Miralle and Plus III at the Opening Ceremony

Acclaimed sports photographer Donald Miralle was in the enviable position of covering the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. From day one, he was getting great shots!

Using the PocketWizard Plus® III at the opening ceremony as a remote camera trigger, Donald was able to capture the fireworks going off in the stadium and over London Bridge simultaneously, resulting in two epic photographs. He writes, “You can be in two places at the same time!”

Donald was kind enough to answer some questions regarding his photography and these shots in particular.

How did you get to photograph the Olympics this year?

I shot this Olympics for Newsweek Magazine / Daily Beast, as I have the last two Olympic Games (Vancouver, Beijing) and the prior four games I shot for Getty Images / Allsport (Athens, Torino, Salt Lake, and Sydney) Working for Newsweek is a great assignment ,as they do not require daily coverage nor are they interested in standard action shots, which they can pick up off the wire if need be, but rather more artistic and different angle shots which is right up my alley. They ran a couple stories as well as weekly “Best of Olympics” galleries they ran on Web and in print, so I was really able to focus on making pictures and less on deadlines. That was really nice.
