What Can HyperSync Do for You?

HyperSync® is one of the most revolutionary features for flash photography since the flash bulb. It’s also the least known or understood concept in flash photography despite it being four years since it was first introduced.

Simply put, HyperSync is a feature in our ControlTL® radios that lets you use shutter speeds above the normal x-sync limitations when using studio flash. It is very dependent on the camera and flash models being used but with the right combination of gear you can use shutter speeds all the way to 1/8000th of a second with studio flash!

How is this possible? The ControlTL radios with this feature (MiniTT1, FlexTT5, PowerST4, PowerMC2) are able to advance the timing of the flash triggering so at speeds above x-sync you’re still getting light from the flash to expose the sensor. Normally, if you tried to go above your camera’s x-sync speed with a flash, you would get “clipping” or a black bar across your image. That part of the sensor missed being exposed by the flash because it was exposed prior to the flash firing.

ProPhoto Coalition Shares High Flying HyperSync Results

When photographer Tony Donaldson set out to test PocketWizard’s HyperSync technology on the PocketWizard MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 with his Nikon D800, he focused on the two things most important to him: “freezing action and being able to create good light even in crappy, midday sunlight.”

For that, he enlisted the help of gymnast Anna Clols and a trampoline. He was able to overpower the sun and freeze motion (even her hair!) while shooting at 1/2500th. Next, he went to a nearby park where he was able to get beautiful light, even at midday, and a shallow depth of field at 1/1250th.

He concludes:

“Having the versatility to make light bend to my will is absolutely amazing. The PocketWizard Mini and Flex worked flawlessly for the whole shoot. Being able to make well-lit pictures at times of the day when the sun is harsh but not caring is invaluable. There will always be times when this comes in handy, and being well practiced in it and knowing how to do it when it counts adds versatility and makes me look like a hero to my clients.”

Tony Donaldson on the new MiniTT1 and FlexTT5

Tony Donaldson is pumped about the Nikon versions of the PocketWizard MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 units, and has posted a write-up about his experiences with them on ProPhotoCoalition.

Along with some detailed anecdotes about his experience working with the new gear, Donaldson includes test shots and behind the scenes photos. There’s even a fabulous photo of a very vintage PocketWizard Receiver, U.S. Patent Number 5,359,375!

Among other good thoughts about the gear and the shoots he employed them on, Donaldson writes, “Using the PocketWizard gear allowed me to be able to create the light I wanted and put it where I wanted it very quickly and with very dependable results in almost every situation. And this was still beta gear!”

Thanks for detailing your latest PocketWizard experiences, Tony. Keep the awesome images coming!

Video: Tony Donaldson and Clementine Ford

Tony sent us a link to a great video of his photo shoot with Clementine Ford for Curve Magazine.

I recently photographed actress Clementine Ford (“The L Word”, “The Young and the Restless”, also Cybill Shepherd’s daughter) for Curve magazine. I love working for Curve, they interview interesting people and give me the opportunity to create whatever images I feel like. I never see the interview first. And usually I don’t talk to the personality before the shoot, as it’s all done with their “people”.
